Thinking and building a roof is a very easier said than done construction project. The basic types are only about a dozen but the variations they offer make the person all mystified. Still, the most popular roof types are gable and hip roof styles.
A lot of people may think why to give so much importance to the construction of roof even when no one sees it so often, but actually the reason behind it is that it serves to protect the interior from the outside weather and climate. Roof designs are made to survive the effects of time and weather, and some ancient designs are commonly used today even for a variety of applications.
Lets start from hip roof. On a hip roof, all sides slope down from the roof ridge to the walls in a variety of possible slopes. This is a common roof type as it can be easily designed and constructed. Hip roofs are built with eaves on all sides of the structure, providing shade and weather – protection for all walls.
Next on the list is a gable roof. A gable roof is similar to a hip roof, but only has two opposing sloped surfaces clossed off with vertical walls at either end. This has grown to be a very popular roof choice because of how easy it is to contruct and since it can offer more open space for an upper floor or an attic.
Now let us talk about bonnet Roof. The bonnet roof is a distinction of both hip-and gable-type roof. This type of roof utilizes the simplicity of hip and gable roofs, and adds a secondary slope that joins to the main structure’s roof.
A flat roof, as the term suggests, is flat in nature and does not offer much of a slope, thus providing you with an extra space to enjoy on your roof. You can also have a green roof set up at your place, in case you have a flat roof. It is more popular as it is not expensive, and can be easily constructed. Tar and Gravel are used to build it.
A mixture of both, a gabel roof and a mansard roof is Gambrel roof. It has two opposing slopes, like that of a Gable roof and each side having multiple slopes, like that of a mansard roof. It suits the American burn the most.
Designing of mansard roof resembles that of hip roof to a lot of extent. It also bears two slopes on each roof surface. One out of them is a standard slope on top most layer of the roof and the other is a steeper slope which reaches up to the structure wall. This is a very old design, in the most preferred design today also.
